  • Global Human Development Forum Eastern Europe and Central Asia should transition toward sustainable development now or pay more in the future, says UN report
    Eastern Europe and Central Asia need to remove fossil fuel subsidies, invest in green jobs, and establish social protection floors to ensure a sustainable future. These were some of the findings from a new UN report "From Transition to Transformation", launched today in Istanbul, Turkey at the first Global Human Development Forum. - ILO News, 23 March 2012

    This paper is part of a series of national studies on collective bargaining and effective responses to the crisis under the Global Product on Supporting collective bargaining and sound industrial relations. It analyses the profound impacts of the financial crisis on industrial relations institutions and practices in Greece. A series of austerity measures have been put in place through new legislation. These include prohibition of salary increases, cuts in pay and benefits for public-sector employees, limits on public-sector hiring, increases in VAT and other taxes, changes in the limitations on mass layoffs and levels of severance compensation payments, and introduction of sub-minimum wages for new entrants to the labour market and those who are on apprenticeships. - ILO Dialogue, 10 March 2012

    Pension Reform in Central and Eastern Europe - in times of crisis, austerity and beyond - (pdf 1,63 MB)
    A decade after the major reform in the 1990s, pension systems in the Central and Eastern Europe are now facing imminent challenges under the pressure of the financial consolidation in the aftermath of the global economic crisis. At the national level, each country has taken a different approach to tackle these issues. The publication consolidates the national efforts through case study of eight CEE countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Poland and Romania).     In its 312th Session the Governing Body of ILO decided to hold the Ninth European Regional Meeting during the first half of 2013, in Oslo, Norway. The proposed agenda of the Meeting is to discuss, on the basis of the Report of the Director-General, progress made by the countries of the Region between 2009 and 2012 towards achieving crucial outcomes determined by the Eighth European Regional Meeting, e.g. analysing and tackling the impact of the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent crises in employment, labour market and social policies in line with the Decent Work Agenda. - ILO GB reports, November 2011
