Galle, Sri Lanka: Women play an vital role in rebuilding lives ravaged by disaster

 Phuket, Thailand: The aftermath of disasters can push women into the labour force against their best interests. Aged 13, Vic is earning US$3 per day working as a mason.

Hambantota, Sri Lanka: A team from the ILO's Jobs Net project surveys women caught up in the tsunami so that livelihood and employment programmes can understand and meet their needs.

 Ginthota, Sri Lanka: Helping to repair important local facilities, such as schools, is another way that women constibute to community reconstruction.

Ule Kareng, Indonesia: A young refugee in Banda Aceh camp decides the disruption will not prevent her continuing her studies.

 Banda Aceh, Indonesia: Medical services resume at the Zaihal Abidin hospital after tsunami damage is repaired.

Lampaya, Indonesia: A refugee camp is like a small town. Women in Banda Aceh find paid employment helping to run essential services and infrastructure.

 Refugee camp at Ule Kareng. Relief assistance that allows families to create some order out of the chaos of disaster offers a first step in towards rebuilding normal lives.
