Senior Management - Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Sector (ED/NORM)

Mr Guy Ryder (United Kingdom) was appointed Executive Director of the Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Sector, with effect from 1 September 2010. Prior to joining the ILO, Mr Ryder was the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, a post to which he was elected at its founding Congress in November 2006, having previously served as General Secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions since February 2002. Mr Ryder has a long-standing experience of the ILO, having first attended the International Labour Conference in 1982 as part of the United Kingdom Workers’ delegation. After working in the International Department of the British Trades Union Congress from 1981 to 1985, he was Industry Secretary of the International Federation of Commercial, Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees before joining the Geneva Office of the ICFTU in 1988. He was elected Secretary of the Workers’ group of the ILO Governing Body from 1993 to 1998. He then became Director of the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities, before serving as Director of the Office of the ILO Director-General from March 1999 to January 2002. Mr Ryder was born in Liverpool, United Kingdom, and educated at the Universities of Cambridge and of Liverpool.
