Providing better protection for Indonesian domestic migrant domestic workers in Malaysia

Malaysia is an important country of destination for migrant domestic workers, the majority of which are from Indonesia. The Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources reported that as at June 2013, there were 180,000 documented migrant domestic workers in Malaysia.

Timor-Leste to showcase road projects using labour-based works in Benin

Representatives from the National Directorate of Roads, Bridges and Flood Control (DRBFC) of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MPWTC) of Timor-Leste, together with staff from the Roads for Development (R4D) and Enhancing Rural Access (ERA) programmes, will participate in the XVIth Regional Seminar for Labour-Based Practitioners in Cotonou, Benin, from 26-30 October 2015.

Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste visited the R4D rehabilitated road

The Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Peter Doyle, visited the Boile-Uatabo road in Bacau Municipality, Timor-Leste, on 6 October 2015. The 5.2 kilometer road connects the city to the beach, contributing to the development of the tourism potential of the area.

Contractors’ Tracer Study

In July 2014 R4D completed a Baseline Contractors’ Tracer Study and is currently undertaking the End-line Contractors’ Tracer Study to verify to what extent R4D’s objectives related to capacity development of local civil works contractors have been achieved. The End-line survey is scheduled to be finalized in November 2015.

Recent years have seen both fishing itself and the market for capture fishery becoming increasingly globalized. Technology in the fishing industry has been changing rapidly as well, often transforming the way that fishing is carried out. Difficult working conditions are common in fishing, regardless of the type of commercial fishing operation.

Promoting social dialogue on financial services reforms

Representatives from six Asia and the Pacific countries attended a two-day Tripartite Regional Workshop in Jakarta from 5-6 August 2015, discussing ways promote social dialogue on financial services reforms in selected Asia and Pacific countries. The participating countries included Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines.
