Press release | Jakarta, Indonesia | 15 November 2021
JAKARTA (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) launches a one-minute video competition (Kompetisi Video Semenit/KOVID) with an aim to promote the safety and health workplace culture during pandemic as a key for productivity and business resilience.

The KOVID is a 60-second duration video competition that can be joined by all Indonesian citizens. The theme for the competition is “Creating Safe and Healthy Workplace During Pandemic” with a focus on “Realising Indonesia with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Culture”.

“This project is one of the ILO’s response to the pandemic to enhance the COVID-19 prevention at and through workplaces. With this approach, all people from different background can be interested to participate. On the other hand, we also hope that the promotion of an embedded and rooted OSH culture will encourage an improved OSH management system in the country and companies,” says Abdul Hakim, Enhancing COVID-19 Prevention at and through Workplaces Project Manager.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been leaving a significant impact on the Indonesian labour market. According to the Statistic Bureau of Indonesia (BPS), the COVID-19 pandemic has affected over 29 million workers in Indonesia as of August 2020, adding to the existing pool of about seven million jobseekers that face significant difficulties in finding a job.

While the development of vaccination gives hope, a labour market recovery tends to lag behind an economic recovery. Thus, the number of workers and their families who are affected by the pandemic is likely to stay at a high level throughout 2021 and during the first half of 2022.

With this creative approach, we believe that this project could strengthen the OSH implementation to increase workers productivity and business re-opening in the next new normal."

In this light, the ILO initiated KOVID which is believed to be an interesting way for creative Indonesians to participate. This project is supported by the Government of Japan in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower, the Indonesian Occupational Health Doctors Association (IDKI) and ILO’s social partners. With Japan as a long-established partner to Indonesia, the Government of Japan supported the country's priority in job creation during pandemic through the promotion and implementation of OSH.

“Hand in hand with ILO, we would like to raise awareness on COVID-19 prevention through this one-minute video competition. With this creative approach, we believe that this project could strengthen the OSH implementation to increase workers productivity and business re-opening in the next new normal,” says Hiroki Sasaki, Labour Attaché of the Embassy of Japan.

The KOVID is open for public from students to filmmakers in Indonesia. The winners can win up to 85 million Rupiah with 50 million Rupiah for the first winner, 20 million Rupiah for runner up, 10 million Rupiah for the third winner, also five popularity winners will get IDR 1 million.

KOVID is officially open on 15 November 2021. Participant can submit their video from the date of launch until 15 January 2022. The winners will be announced on 3 February 2022.

ILO also invites filmmakers and academia as the judges of KOVID, including Netflix “A World Without” Film Director, Nia Dinata; Rector of Jakarta Art Institute, Dr. Indah Tjahjawulan; and film critics and Editor-in-Chief Cinema Poetica Adrian Jonathan Pasaribu.
