The partnership protocol agreement was signed between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan, the International Labour Organization and the European Union on October 16th, 2008. TACKLE is currently the only ILO/IPEC project active in South Sudan.

Output 1: Improved country level child labour and education legal framework

• Having become an independent country on July 9, 2011, South Sudan needs to among other actions ratify core ILO conventions on elimination of child labour. TACKLE Project will support the Ministry of Labour in developing a list of hazardous work. TACKLE already supported the government of South Sudan to form a National Steering Committee and a Child Labour Unit within the Ministry of Labour.

Output 2: Strengthened institutional capacity to formulate and implement child labour strategies

Strengthened institutional capacity to formulate and implement child labour elimination strategies:

• Numerous capacity building activities targeting government officials and members of the civil society have been organized and facilitated by the TACKLE Project including orientation on strategies for tackling child labour, familiarization with the ILO Conventions Nos. 138 and 182, training on economic empowerment of children formerly associated with armed forces and groups, education and child labour elimination, child labour reporting, baselines and rapid assessments on child labour among others. These trainings have helped stakeholders get insight into emerging child labour problems in the newly independent country.
• Training was also held for the National Steering Committee members on their roles and responsibilities. The inter-ministerial committee were tasked in coming up with the work plan for South Sudan. Support to the Ministry of Labour to strengthen the secretariat is ongoing.

Output 3: Targeted actions to combat child labour

Activities under this result are yet to be undertaken.

Output 4: Enhanced knowledge base and networks on child labour and education

• Through TACKLE Project, South Sudan has for the last three years marked the World Day against Child Labour (WDACL). Each year, thousands of children from different schools in Juba City convene to drum up for protection from child labour. The printed and electronic media has played a lead role in amplifying messages on child labour.
