    Extension of collective bargaining agreements: Evidence from the updated IRLex database

    Collective bargaining agreements are the result of collective bargaining negotiations between one or more workers’ organizations on one hand and one or more employers or employers’ organizations on the other to determine working conditions and terms of employment and regulate the relationships between workers and employers and their respective organizations. As per general principles of contract law such agreements should be binding only on the signatory parties of the agreement. Nonetheless, often regulatory frameworks provide for the extension of collective bargaining agreements beyond the signatory parties subject to the respect of certain conditions or requirements. This factsheet based on the IRLex database, provides a comparative overview of legal frameworks regulating extension mechanisms.

    Trade union-led Migrant Worker Resource Centres in ASEAN and Jordan: Case studies for protecting and organizing migrant workers

    This paper features good approaches and innovations by trade union MRCs in five Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Cambodia, Indonesia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia and Thailand) as well as in Jordan. It highlights how the MRCs are useful and effective avenues in protecting the rights of migrant workers and eventually helping trade unions to organize them. The examples introduced in this paper can be replicated by trade unions that intend to launch campaigns to organize migrant workers.

    A global analysis of worker protest in digital labour platforms

    This paper presents findings from the Leeds Index of Platform Labour Protest, a database of platform worker protest events around the world in four platform sectors: ride-hailing, food delivery, courier services and grocery delivery for the period January 2017 to July 2020. The findings show that the single most important cause of platform worker protest is pay, followed by employment status, and health and safety.
