GENEVA (ILO News) – On 7 November 2011, the Government of Korea ratified three ILO Conventions, namely, the Unemployment Convention, 1919 (No. 2), Forty-Hour Week Convention, 1935 (No. 47) and Occupational Cancer Convention, 1974 (No. 139). This brings to 27 the number of ILO Conventions ratified by the Republic of Korea.

On receiving the instruments of ratification, Ms Doumbia-Henry, Director of International Labour Standards Department, stated that “The Republic of Korea has been engaged in the past months in intensive consultations with the International Labour Office concerning ratification of a number of international labour Conventions. The ratification of these three instruments aimed at combating unemployment, providing for a forty-hour work week and for protection of workers from occupational cancer responds to critical concerns of workers.”

According to Mr. Sang-Ki Park, Ambassador of Korea, “since becoming a member of the ILO in 1991, Korea has pursued the ratification of ILO Conventions, which are considered key international labor standards, through comparative analysis between the Conventions and Korean laws and regulations. By ratifying ILO Conventions, Korea declared to the ILO constituents and the international tripartite community that its labor laws and regulations are in line with the international standards.”
