Trade, Investment and Decent Work for Asia

The aim of this course is to better understand the trade, investment and labour market nexus and its implications for the Asian region in terms of decent work, responsible business practices and sustainable development.

INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
The aim of this course is to better understand the trade, investment and labour market nexus and its implications for the Asian region in terms of decent work, responsible business practices and sustainable development. It considers broader labour market implications of trade and investment policies, and how such policies through the promotion of cooperation and dialogue can be a vehicle for supporting international labour standards and responsible business conduct. including employment. The course aligns with broader policy and regional development frameworks including the Bali Declaration, Singapore Statement and those of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The overall objective of the training course is to build capacity, increase knowledge and improve dialogue between the participants concerning the trade and labour nexus by presenting analysis and discussing new findings on the effects of trade and FDI on the labour market.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to better advise their institutions on
• the linkages between trade, foreign direct investment and decent work,
• formulation of trade and investment policies to facilitate dialogue and support
decent work.
• domestic policies for the promotion of sustainable enterprises

The following topics will be addressed:
a. Regional and sectoral trends: ILO’s Decent Work indicators and trade frameworks
b. Trade, investment policy and decent work, such as labour provisions in trade and investment arrangements
c. Responsible business conduct, ILS and HRDD,
d. Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration)
e. Productivity ecosystems and decent work
f. Safe and healthy work environments

WHO ATTENDS THIS COURSE?
The course on Trade, Investment and Decent Work for Asia is designed for representatives from government, employers’ and workers’ representatives, and other key institutions with a mandate concerning trade, investment and decent work from ASEAN Countries.
