iUPSHIFT programme

Innovation pitches from youth mentors

Through iUPSHIFT programme, youth mentors trained by the ILO and UNICEF in Uganda on social entrepreneurship and life skills, developed innovative ideas to improve waste management and sustainable energy production.

Date issued: 15 March 2023 |
The ILO and UNICEF together 30 aspiring youth mentors from across Uganda, including refugees and host community members.

The mentors were trained on how to promote #innovation amongst youth in their communities, so that they become entrepreneurs and job-creators.

The mentors learnt how to identify problems, and to understand the people they were solving for. They created dummy innovations, which were judged by a panel.

Over the next few months, the mentors, who are all attached to community-based organizations, will train youth in their home districts, and take them through the multi-week #UPSHIFT innovation programme.

The youth will work in teams, and at the end, the best #innovation will win seed funding, to grow the idea. These videos capture the initial ideas pitched by the teams at the end of workshop.
