13th African Regional Meeting

Ethiopia to host 13th ILO African Regional Meeting

Media advisory | 16 November 2015
ADDIS ABABA (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) will hold its 13th African Regional Meeting (ARM) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 30 November-03 December 2015.

Hosted by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for the third time since 2000, the high-level meeting on “Inclusive and Sustainable Development in Africa through Decent Work “is set to discuss the strategic way forward for the region in the context of the recently adopted 2030 sustainable development goals.

Against a background of unprecedented unemployment rates, limited employment opportunities, especially for Africa’s youth, and growing inequalities in access to basic social protection, the economic and social actors of the world of work in Africa will consider key policy recommendations for Africa’s inclusive growth and social progress.

Government, workers’ and employers’ representatives from the ILO’s 54 African member States will discuss a report by ILO Director-General Guy Ryder who participated last July in the Third International Conference on Financing for Development held in Addis Ababa.

The programme of the ARM 2015 includes:
  • A High-Level Dialogue: Decent Work in Africa in the Post-2015 context: Rights and social dialogue for inclusive and sustainable growth;
  • A special plenary debate: “Transition from the informal to the formal economy in Africa: The way forward”
  • A special plenary debate: “Employment and new technologies: Opportunities for Africa’s youth”
  • A special session on “the Promotion and Application of the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy in Africa”, and
  • Two information sessions dedicated to the “Joint Labour Migration Programme” for Africa and the ILO “Engagement in fragile states in the Africa region”.
The Regional Conference will take place at the United Nations Conference Centre of the UNECA in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
