Description

Discouraged by regular crop loss due to heavy flooding caused by climate change, many onion growers in the coastal regions of Petit Sable, Grand Sable and Bambous Virieux in Mauritius have given up production of the local red onion (onion toupie) during the last twenty years to seek their livelihood elsewhere. As part of the project 'The Other Migrants: Climate Change, Environmental Degradation and Sustainable Development in the Republic of Mauritius', the International Organization for Migration (IOM) worked with the Association des Planteurs du Sud Est in August-September 2011 to build a drainage system on one of the main onion plantations in Grand Sable, with the aim of strengthening resilience to flooding. The new drainage infrastructure channels excess water to the sea, thus helping to avoid crop loss.
