National Competency Standards for workers in the tourism and hospitality sector accepted
National Competency Standards in four key occupations of the tourism and hospitality sector have been approved by the Bangladesh Technical Education Board and endorsed by the Tourism & Hospitality Industry Skills Council.
The approved National Competency Standards will be the basis for training, assessment and certification of trainees in those target occupations. Candidates who demonstrate competence will be awarded nationally recognized certificates under the new National Technical and Vocational Qualifications Framework (NTVQF). Existing workers can also be certified with these NTVQF certificates through the new Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) system.
Tourism and hospitality is a priority service sector because of the major opportunities it offers for development, employment and economic growth. It is a sector which has the ability to be transformational, particularly in transitional areas. Tourism and hospitality also offers huge potential for employing young people, minority and indigenous communities and creating employment in rural areas.
The four occupations now available for national certification are cooking, food and beverage servicing, housekeeping and tour guiding. For each occupation, four levels of qualification (Level 1 - Level 4) have been approved. Each level corresponds to specific job requirements, for example in cooking, an NTVQF certificate corresponds to Commis/Assistant Cook.
National Competency Standards are part of reforming Bangladesh’s skills development system which is currently being undertaken by the Government of Bangladesh through the National Skills Development Policy and assisted by funding from the European Union (through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Reform Project), Canada (through the Bangladesh Skills for Employment and Productivity Project) and other donors including the Swiss Development Corporation.
