Community-based Workplace Surveillance Group on Child Labour Launched
10 November 2010
Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) established 42 Community-based Workplace Surveillance Group (CWSGs) on Child Labour in 4 Zones of DCC. The official launching ceremony was held on 10th November 2010 at Kazi Bashir Milonayoton (Mohanagar Nattyo Mancho) in Dhaka.

Training for journalists of electronic and print media on ‘United Nations Standards on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples’

International Labour Organization (ILO), Country office for Bangladesh organized a day-long training for journalists of electronic and print media on ‘United Nations Standards on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ on 25th October 2010 at YWCA Auditorium, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The purpose of the training was to build capacity of the journalists on the ILO and UN instruments on indigenous peoples and the implementation of these standards in Bangladesh.A total of 30 Journalists from different print and electronic media participated in the training.

Tripartite Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Assessing and Addressing the Effects of Trade on Employment
8 - 12 August 2010
ILO Country Office for Bangladesh, Ministry of Labour and Employment and ITC-ILO Jointly organized a five day knowledge sharing workshop from 8-12 August 2010 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka. The workshop intended to enhance the capacity of the government officials, trade unions and employers on understanding the issues related to trade and employment.

The Observance of the World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL 2010) in Bangladesh. “Eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2016”
11 - 12 June 2010
Under the overall coordination of the Urban Informal Economy (UIE) Project of ILO, Dhaka, the 9th World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL 2010), was observed in Bangladesh in a befitting manner. The most unique part of the observation was that this year’s WDACL was observed nationally under the leadership of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, ILO and UNICEF. The theme for the day was “Eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2016” and the slogan was “Let’s Eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour, Let’s Ensure Education for All Children”

National Consultation on ‘Country Responses to Child Labour and Way Forward’

A one day-long National Consultation on ‘Country Responses to Child Labour and Way Forward’ jointly organised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MOLE) and ILO at Hotel Purbani in Dhaka. The overall objective of the consultation was to provide platform for stakeholders to discuss drawbacks, challenges and gaps in addressing child labour in Bangladesh and to propose concrete and coherent actions towards effective and progressive elimination of worst forms of child labour by 2016.

National Technical Consultation Meeting on the Draft Occupational Safety and Health Policy in Dhaka

The Technical Committee constituted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of Bangladesh organized a national technical consultation meeting to discuss ways to improve the draft Occupational Safety and Health Policy of Bangladesh at the Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka on 30 December 2009 with the support of ILO.

Training on International Labour Standards for Constituents
21 - 23 December 2009
ILO-Dhaka organized a training workshop on International Labour Standards (ILS) on 21 - 22 December 2009 at BRAC CDM at Rajendrapur in Gazipur. The key objective of this training was to develop capacity of constituents to have clear understanding on ILS, procedures of ratification of ILO conventions, supervisory mechanism and role of constituents and reporting obligation.

National Roundtable on “ILO Convention 169, Indigenous People and the Bangladesh National Parliament”
20 December 2009
A national roundtable on “ILO Convention 169, Indigenous Peoples and the Bangladesh National Parliament” was organized on 20th December by the ILO Office in Dhaka in cooperation with Research and Development Collective at the Spectra Convention Centre, Dhaka. The objectives of the national roundtable were to create awareness on ILO C169 ratification, and strengthening parliamentary role on indigenous peoples issue in Bangladesh. A number of parliamentarians, academics, indigenous peoples’ representatives, development partners and civil society members participated in the roundtable.

Field Visit to DCC-ILO Action Programme on Child Labour

H.E. A.J.A.J.M.G. Hennekens, Ambassador, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Ms Panudda Boonpala, Country Director, ILO visited Dholaipar Multi Purpose Centre and Jatrabari Vocational Training Centre at Jatrabari in Dhaka on 18 November 2009 to see the field level operations of the Urban Informal Economy (UIE) Project.
