Moving forward, empowering change in industries in Bangladesh: Leadership workshop

In developing countries with rapidly expanding economies such as Bangladesh, it is imperative that industrial growth is supported by strong skill development systems that maximize the potential productivity of the workforce. Strong skill development systems require leadership by industry as well as the public sector, and the objective of this workshop is to further develop the leadership skills of key individuals.

Background

The Bangladesh TVET Reform Project is working to develop an integrated approach to skills development across the country. The goal is that skills development in Bangladesh will be recognized and supported by government and industry as a coordinated and well planned strategy for national and enterprise development. The reformed skills development system will empower individuals to access decent employment and ensure Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global market through improved skill, knowledge and qualifications that are recognized for quality across the globe.

A reformed skills development system requires strong linkages and coordination between the private sector, government and social partners. In order to encourage this, the project is focusing on highlighting the long term benefits for all and the increased productivity which would be made possible under a unified, collaborative approach. Leadership training will assist in developing ‘industry change managers’; individuals that can promote the necessity of effective skills development programs in maximizing rapid and inclusive economic growth.

Objectives

The workshop aims to:
  • Strengthen the leadership capacity of young executives in the five sectors as well as senior officials of line ministries and representatives from the National Coordination Committee for Worker’s Education (NCCWE), Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
  • Encourage long-term growth in priority industries by equipping participants with modern, effective managerial skills and ensuring their understanding of the importance of teamwork and unity within, and between organizations.
  • Build on the project’s successes over the last twelve months in developing the leadership and management skills of institutional managers (principals and government participants).
