Seminar on Sustainable Development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts

The changing socio-economic and environmental situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts was at the centre of discussion at the seminar on sustainable development, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tract Affairs and Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) with support from ILO and UNDP. The seminar took place on January 24 at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.

Way out of informality: Facilitating Formalisation of Informal Economy in South Asia

The informal economy in South Asia is estimated to stand at 80 to 90 percent of the labour force. These include wage labourers, self-employed persons, unpaid family labour, piece-rate workers, and other hired labour. The huge scale of vulnerable employment presents a challenge to stable and sustainable development. This sub-regional project contributes to employment policies that facilitate accelerated expansion of the formal sector. The project seeks to emphasize knowledge management so as to fill the large knowledge gap in policymaking and to embrace the proven ILO strategy of participatory dialogue.

The main objective of the workshop was to share the gap analysis between MLC and the relevant national legal instruments with the Stakeholders.

Tripartite Workshop on Skills for Trade and Economic Diversification (STED) Research Findings: Agro-Processing Sector and Pharmaceutical Sector

International Labour Organization (ILO) and Bangladesh Employers' Federation (BEF) jointly organized a technical workshop on the research findings of a study on the agro-processing sector and the pharmaceuticals sector. The workshop was held on 7 and 8 December 2011 at the BEF Conference Hall in Dhaka. The workshop intended to share the preliminary findings on skill demands for current and future needs of two important export sectors: agro-processing and pharmaceuticals industry.
