What they probably won't tell you is that he will do it without hands - both were amputated following an electrical fire. having a disability has not stopped him becoming a father, a mechanic, an entrepreneur and a trainer though.

   Workers who were victims of Rana Plaza were uninsured and intensive efforts to compensate them had to be made after the fact. The ILO says the accident is a wake-up call to establish national employment injury insurance so all workers are protected when accidents happen.

7. Bangladesh ready-made garment sector, challenges and way forward

   At 8:54 am local time on April 24, 2013, the Rana Plaza building collapsed claiming more than 1,100 lives and leaving many more injured. Over the past two years, the ILO has been working with its local and international partners on several fronts to improve the situation of workers in the Bangladeshi garment industry.

8. From worker to owner

   20 April 2015

   Haunted by the Rana Plaza collapse Nasir Uddin Sohel could not face returning to a large factory. After receiving counselling from ILO he used his compensation money to setup his own small garment factory. A year on, the business has grown from two sewing machines to eight and he now employs six other Rana Plaza survivors. ILO support to Nasir was provided through a programme funded by Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

9. Towards a safer RMG sector for Bangladesh

   As labour inspectors, Farzana Islam and her colleagues are on the front line to ensure the safety and rights of over four million ready-made garment workers in Bangladesh. ILO supports capacity building of the labour inspectorate through a programme funded by Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom to help it more effectively carry out its regulatory oversight role.

10. A small shop built on big dreams

    Badly injured while helping to rescue fellow workers from the rubble of Rana Plaza, Shahjahan Selim is now permanently disabled. Through ILO medical and business skills assistance Selim has overcome adversity to open a small shop which after just one year of operation has grown to twice its original size. ILO support to Selim was provided through a programme funded by Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

2. Promoting Fire Safety in Bangladesh's Garment Factories

   In March 2013 the tripartite constituents of the ILO - government, employers and workers - developed a National Tripartite Plan of Action on Fire Safety for the Ready-Made Garment Sector in Bangladesh. It came about after two devastating fires at ready-made garment factories in 2012 and early 2013 killed 120 workers and injured many others. One of the activities in the Plan of Action, is to develop and deliver mass worker education tools, such as this video, to promote safety and health in the ready-made garments sector.

The project discussed is part of the Green Jobs in Asia regional project that is sponsored by the Australian Government - ILO partnership agreement (2010-2015).

2. Bringing green energy and green jobs to Bangladesh

   The majority of homes in Bangladesh aren't connected to the national electricity grid.This is particularly true in rural areas away from the main transmission lines. Many homes and shops rely on environmentally unfriendly diesel generators. But the government has been working with the ILO, social partners and civil society groups to train rural people in solar power use. This combines an economic and social need with green jobs' skills and creates entrepreneurial opportunities through the installation and maintenance of solar homes systems. The work is supported by the Australian Government - ILO Partnership Agreement (2010 - 2015).

1. Prime Minister of Bangladesh speaks at Global Jobs Summit

   Speaking by video address to the Global Jobs Summit at the 98th International Labour Conference (ILC), the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh shared her concerns with other world leaders about the on-going crises in financial and jobs markets. At the closing session of the Summit, Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina added that special action was needed to address the needs of the world’s less developed countries and in particular migrant workers, a group of people whose needs would have to be addressed jointly by migrant sending and receiving countries. The ILC has attracted 4,000 delegates from Governments, Workers and Employers organizations from more than 180 countries to the annual event of the UN agency dealing with issues affecting the world of work.
