Equality and discrimination figure prominently among ILO’s fundamental principles and rights at work, along with freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, the abolition of forced labour, and the elimination of child labour.

Promoting equality and eliminating discrimination at work are essential to achieving decent work in China and Mongolia. Extending labour protection and applying principles of non-discrimination and equality in workplaces therefore play a vital role.

Both China and Mongolia have ratified Equal Remuneration Convention, 1951 (No. 100) and Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Convention, 1958 (No. 111) and national laws and regulations specifically ban discrimination in areas of employment including recruitment, salary, social benefits etc. However, some improvements are still needed to completely eliminate discrimination based on age, sex, social status or disability.

The ILO’s involvement in this area includes promoting International Labour Standards that support equality, ensuring equality and eliminating all types of discrimination includes promotion of labour standards, support to drafting national employment legislation and policies, capacity building of government and non-governmental organizations and institutions and implementation of a technical cooperation project on improving the employability of persons with disabilities.
