BANGKOK (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of the Republic of Korea have signed an agreement that will provide US$1,140,000, as well as technical expertise, to support the development of decent work in more than 15 Asian countries.

The 2012 work programme will focus on four areas: Competitiveness, Productivity and Jobs; Labour Market Governance and Social Protection; Labour Migration; and Research on Decent Work and Occupational Safety and Health.

The plan includes developing a network of skills institutions and a national skills standard in the service sector in Lao PDR. Work in other countries will include setting up social insurance systems, developing a promotional framework on occupational safety and health, supporting the skills recognition of migrant workers, labour migration management, and green jobs.

The agreement is part of the “Korea/ILO Partnership Programme Towards the Realization of the Asian Decent Work Decade”. The partnership represents the ILO and the Government of the Republic of Korea’s continuing joint work towards realizing the goals of the Asian Decent Work Decade through technical cooperation. ILO experts will work with eight Korean partner institutions to implement the programme in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste, Viet Nam, and other countries.

The Korean Government has supported the work of the ILO in Asia and the Pacific since 2004. In the last eight years the Korean Government has provided approximately US$8 million in funding, in addition to the support of technical experts. It works to support the aims of the Asian Decent Work Decade, namely the achievement of full, productive and decent employment for all in the region by 2015.
