International labour migration statistics in South Asia: Establishing a subregional database and improving data collection for evidence-based policy-making
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of statistics related to labour migration from South Asia. It also includes conversations on developments and trends in labour migration, migrant worker attributes, and associated thematic areas in the sub-region.

Technical experts in the fields of labour migration and statistics met to obtain a regional picture of migration-related statistics by sharing information and data collection approaches among the countries in South Asia. There was also discussion of how national, regional and global level processes and plans for collecting and analyzing data can fit together, e.g. a regional labour migration statistics database, promotion of ICLS standards and SDG monitoring. A number of areas were identified in which the ILO could support in national and regional capacity building on migration-related statistics.
Ms Simrin Singh has officially taken over as the new Country Director for the ILO Country Office for the Sri Lanka and the Maldives on 1st April 2017.
Measures to Increase Employment of Nationals in Expatriate Dominated Occupations and promote decent work among all workers
The high dependence on foreign labour makes employment and migration two interdependent issues requiring a coordinated strategy. On the one hand, nearly half of the employed are foreigners , and not only they play a predominant role in low skilled occupations, but are numerous also among professionals and technicians. On the other hand, despite the buoyant economic growth that allowed the Maldives to reach the status of a middle-income country in 2011 , the labour market has been increasingly characterised by unemployment and discouragement.
